Toshiba´s first smartphone aimed at the mass market of consumers rather than business users, it´s also the first mobile phone in the UK to launch with Qualcomm’s high-power Snapdragon processing platform.
But it´s the screen that´s the main draw here, all 4.1-inches of it! Toshiba has utilised its extensive television expertise for the TG01´s full touchscreen, and it shows, big time. If you´re a media-hungry type who´s forever watching videos or playing games on your handset, this thing will blow you away.

If you´re reading this review, chances are you´re doing so because you´re intrigued by the sheer size of the TG01´s screen. Well, apart from the size of it (an industry record), you´ll be pleased to know that it doesn´t suffer because of it. Drawing on decades of experience building some of the most impressive and technologically advance TVs and other projection outputs the world has seen, Toshiba have ensured this screen is as good as it could be. Using both a variable backlight (to enhance the look of dark scenes in film of shows) and dynamic gamma correction to reduce colour stepping (meaning the sharpest picture imaginable) it´s unlikely you would have seen anything this impressive on a mobile device before. And with full support for just about every type of video and animation format out there, you could soon be commuting or otherwise travelling very happy indeed. (Note though, that there´s no direct input for 3.5mm heaphones, you´ll need to use the provided adaptor).
Aside from all that eye candy, what else has the TG01 got to offer? Just about everything you´d expect, is the short answer to that. Running on Windows Mobile 6.1 (with a free and easy to install update to 6.5 as soon as that´s released) and utilising the power of the Snapdragon 1ghz processor, this thing flips, slides and jumps between menus and functions smoother than you can hope for. The processor – seen in this device for the first time – really is a work of art and you´ll be amazed at the speeds thing thing can achieve. Add to that your usual gamut of WiFi, Bluetooth, A-GPS, Windows Office Portable, a camera (though only 3.2MP) and a supermodel thin size of only 9.9mm, and you´ve got one impressive phone on your hands.
In looks, the TG01 has drawn many comparisons to the iPhone, and we think this is more than fair. But with that large screen, and being quite considerably thinner than the iPhone, we the the TG01 also holds its own in the looks department. You can also choose between two colours – all black, or all white, both as bold and distinctive as each other as far as we´re concerned.
Conclusion
If media- and game-playing is your thing, they you literally don´t need to look any further. The huge, crystal clear screen combined with the superfast Qualcomm processor means the TG01 will be the most impressive addition to your palm ever.
