The Taiwan-based leader in mobile computing is updating its Liquid smartphone launched last October with a new Acer Liquid e sporting the new Android 2.1 Éclair OS. It confirms the suspicion that there is no upgrade path between the older 1.6 Donut or older versions to the new ones as Acer could have just issued a downloadable update patch instead of going into the trouble of releasing a new handset with a new branding.

Improved OS Features

But no matter, the updated Acer Liquid e is expected to bring a new level of features that come with the new 2.1 version of the Android OS, such as optimized processor speed which takes the same 1 GHz Snapdragon powering both old and new Liquids to its optimum potential, a new browser user interface with the HTML 5 support, digital zoom, MS Exchange support, improved Google Maps 3.1.2, a built-in LED flash support for the camera, Bluetooth 2.1 and support for Motion event to track multitouch data input.

Upscale Features

The promised OS potential improvements aside, the new Liquid shares the same hardware features of the smartphone it is updating. It’s the same 3G on the dual band UMTS with 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and 2.0 HSUPA speeds as well as a 2G on the quad band GSM with class 10 GPRS/EDGE radio data speeds. There’s WiFi 802.11b/g for hotspot surfing and local connectivity support for Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP and miniUSB 2.0. You get the same SatNav functionality with a built-in GPS receiver for A-GPS support.

You still get the same 3.5 inch TFT capacitive touchscreen with 256k colors with accelerometer for auto rotate and proximity sensors for touchscreen sensitivity auto-turn off when held against the face in a call. You get the same upscale 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and geo-tagging with VGA video recording at 20fps.

Multimedia comes with the same media playback support for popular and common audio and video files as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack for using high fidelity headsets.

Its internal memory consists of the same 512 MB ROM and 256 MB ROM with nearly unlimited phonebook entries and fields as well as call records. You get the same microSD expandability for up to 32 GB. Talk and standby times on the same 1350 mAh Li-Ion battery haven’t changes at 5 hours and 400 hours, respectively.

The Acer Liquid e gets the same social networking integration support for Facebook as well ad media sharing integration with Flickr. You also get a document viewer for MS Office and PDF files, email client and HTML browser.
