The Texas-based Dell, once the number one PC maker in the world and is now third after HP and Acer, has followed on the product strategy of its fellow PC maker based in Cupertino called Apple to come out with its own line of smartphones.

Its first product in the mobile phone business it has entered is aptly called the Dell Mini 3. It comes in two variants, the 3i goes direct to China and the 3iX is for the rest of the world. Apart from getting a different radio frequency, a different OS, WiFi, LED flash and being a bit heavier, the 3iX shares the same hardware and all, except that it comes in oiled bronze and ocean blue colors, well distinct from the colors of the 3i destined exclusively for the China markets.

Both handsets get the same gorgeous 3.5-inch TFT LCD capacitive touchscreen with wide-VGA resolution and 256k colors. They come with an accelerometer sensor for auto rotate viewing convenience as well as a proximity sensor for disabling the touchscreen sensitivity when held to the face in a call. Apart from having a capacitive screen, you also get multitouch data entry technology.

Imaging is served with a rather conventional 3.2 megapixel digital camera with autofocus and LED flash as well as geo tagging from its GPS receiver. There’s video recording but no secondary camera for supporting 3G video calls.

Multimedia on both handsets doesn’t get an FM radio but is supported by video playback support for files in the MP4/H.263/H.264/WMV format and an audio playback support for files in the MP3/e-AAC+/WMA format. Both have no 3.5mm audio jack but their A2DP profile support can let you enjoy wireless stereo listening on the road.

The Dell Mini 3 is a quad band GSM with class 12 GPRS/EDGE data speeds on the 2G network. It’s also a 3G phone on the tri band UMTS with only HSDPA data speeds at 3.6 Mbps. It gets WiFi 802.11b/g for hotspot surfing which the China version does not have.

But both get Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and microUSB 2.0 for local high speed data transfers and synching. SatNav is also present in both with integrated GPS receiver supporting A-GPS as well and the international version get preloaded with Google Maps. The non-China version also gets SNS apps for Facebook and Twitter integration, YouTube, Calendar and Google talk integration.
