HTC Desire deals on contract

HTC Desire deals

It is not uncommon to see smartphones with similar and often identical features in the market. Many of them are driven by chipsets considered as mere off-the-shelf commodities that can make many of the features we take for granted common to many models.

HTC, the Taiwan-based world leader in smartphones after Nokia is the OEM for Google’s Nexus One Android smartphone. And it’s not surprising that its HTC Passion used in the Nexus would morph into a very similar smartphone in the HTC Desire

Differences with Nexus One

Ergonomically sporting the same form factor and slim design, the Desire gets differentiated with the use of an optical track pad where the Nexus uses a conventional trackball. Battery life gets a bit of a mess as the Desire gets a shorter 6.6 hours of talk time on 2G while the Nexus gets a more generous 10 hours on the same 1400 mAh Li-Ion battery.

Then there’s Dolby Mobile sound enhancement that the Desire has which the Nexus don’t. Lastly, it’s all about the HTC Sense UI. Many who have seen the Desire easily concludes it’s the Nexus One with a Sense. The two, however, may not ever meet as the 3G dual band UMTS on the Desire can’t work in US markets of the Nexus One, though the latter’s tri-band UMTS can work in Asian and European markets.

Common Superphone Features

Apart from these obvious and not-so-obvious differences, the desire and the Nexus One can be said to be the same banana. Both run on the same Qualcomm QSD8250 Snapdragon engine clocked at 1 GHz and running the same Android 2.1 Éclair platform. Both are 3G phones with the same WiFi 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR and A2DP and microUSB 2.0 local data connectivity. There’s SatNav from a built-in GPS receiver with A-GPS support.

The HTC Desire gets the same 3.7-inch WideVGA capacitive touch screen display with multitouch data input support, an accelerometer for auto rotate viewing convenience and proximity sensor for touchscreen sensitivity auto turn-off when holding the handset against your ears in a call. Imaging likewise gets the same 5 megapixel autofocus snapper with LED flash and HD quality video recording at D1 resolution (720 x 480) and 30fps frame rates.

Mobile entertainment starts with the same capable media playback for popular media file codecs, FM stereo receiver with RDS and stereo headphone listening via a 3.5mm AV jack or Bluetooth A2Dp support. Internal phone memory is likewise almost identical with 512 MB ROM on both but RAM is a bit higher on the Desire at 576 MB compared with 512 MB on the Nexus.
