HTC HD2 deals on contract

HTC Touch HD2 deals

Qualcomm’s 1GHz Snapdragon is appearing in many prestige flagship smartphones with some firsts of their kind here or there, but it doesn’t matter. Over time, they get superceded but not for a few who can last a few more years for having features that are at the top when they appeared and don’t easily go down in the 2nd or 3rd product iteration.

One of them is the HTC HD2 that defines what a flagship smartphone should look like. Known variously in other markets as the HTC Leo 100 and the HTC HD2 T8585, the new HD2 could have been a much better handset if not for its outdated Windows Mobile 6.5 OS. Hopefully it’s powerful enough to get the WinPho7 upgrade to fully realize its potential.

Powerful Features

What immediately stands out from its monolithic slim body measuring 120.5 x 67 x 11mm and weighing a hefty 157g is its expansive 4.3-inch TFT LCD capacitive touchscreen with wide-VGA resolution and again wasted with a mere 64k colors from a display-incompetent OS.

But no matter, you still get auto rotate viewing UI from its gravity accelerometer and auto-disable of its touchscreens sensitivities when held against the face in a call. Apart from its Sense UI that makes the OS look unique against other Windows Mobile handsets, you get multitouch data input technology like what the iPhone has.

Other that this, the HD2 is no different from other flagship handsets. You get a quad band GSM radio with class 12 GPRS/EDGE data speeds on 2G/2.5G as well as a dual band UMTS on 3G with US and European versions. It comes with HSDPA at 7.2 Mbps and HSUPA at 2 Mbps data connectivity speeds for a no-wait online experience.

There’s also WiFi 802.11b/g for hotspot surfing at 54 Mbps, Bluetooth 2,1 with A2DP and microUSB 2.0 for wireless and wired local data transfers, respectively. SatNav is preset with an integrated GPS receiver supporting A-GPS and comes with digital compass and an HTC-specific NaviPanel controls on the screen.

The HTC HD2 images with a superlative 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and dual LED flash, geo tagging and VGA video recording at 30fps. Entertainment gets a stereo FM receiver with RDS and the media playback support for audio files in the MP3/WAV/WMA/eAAC+ formats and video files in the MP4/WMV/H.264/H.263 content codecs.

You get speakerphone and a 3.5mm audio jack for standards headphones. You also get to listen in wireless stereo using its A2DP profile support on Bluetooth.

Onboard memory gets a 448MB RAM and 512MB ROM with microSD upgradeability for up to 32 GB. You get up to 12 hours of music playback, 6.3 hours of talk time and 490 hours in standby from its 1230 mAh li-ion battery on a single charge.

It seems like owning a proprietary operating system is the big thing for many mobile phone manufacturers these days. Before, it was only Palm, BlackBerry and Apple that used their own mobile platforms for their phones. In the meanwhile, Nokia, Samsung and other manufacturers have been using the Symbian OS, Microsoft’s WinMo and the Google Android for their high end smart phones. Last year, Nokia broke the trend by announcing that they would be...

Being sued by Apple does not seem to have slowed HTC down – Q1 profits for 2010 are very healthy indeed. No doubt buoyed by the levels of interest in the newest handsets, Desire and Legend, HTC has just revealed a profit for 2010 Q1 of more than 5.03 billion Taiwan dollars (about £103 million). The company has also announced revenues of 37.7 billion Taiwan dollars – 19.3% more than HTC made in Q1 in 2009. However, the net profit is sligh...
