HTC Legend deals on contract

HTC Legend deals

With newer cutting edge technologies, mobile phone makers take some strides to better their preceding models. The Taiwan-based smartphone leader HTC does exactly that when it decided to supersede its highly successful HTC Hero with the new HTC Legend

At first glance the Legend impresses with a classy brushed aluminum exterior finish designed on a unibody that is said to have been carved out from a single aluminum block. That makes it indestructible and the live demos where it gets hurled against a sold wall and survive seem to confirm its heirloom quality.

The statement that a mobile phone feels solid in your hand is now an understatement as it is literally solid. It comes in either gray aluminum or black colors you can choose from.

Improving on the Hero

Succeeding the esteemed Hero, the Legend gets 9 grams lighter and about 3 mm thinner with the newer optical trackpad where the Hero had a more conventional trackball. It sports the same 3.2-inch HVGA capacitive touchscreen with multitouch data entry support but gets a more brilliant and energy efficient AMOLED screen technology with 16 million colors compared with the 65k colors in the Hero.

Under the hood, the Legend has an improved engine with a 600 MHz Qualcomm MSM7227 processor replacing the Hero’s 526 MHz Qualcomm MSM 7200. It runs on the newer and more feature-rich Android 2.1 Éclair where the Hero is stuck with an older Android 1.5 Cupcake with no upgrade path todate.

Battery-wise, you get a slightly lower 7 hours of talk time and 440 hours in standby on 2G from a slimmer 1300 mAh battery compared with the 1350 mAh battery of its predecessor.

Common Features

The HTC Legend is a 3G phone on the dual band UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA and a quad band GSM with class 10 GPRS/EDGE on the 2G network. WiFi 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and miniUSB 2.0 to serve its local high speed data transfer functions.

Its imaging feature is every bit a carry-over from that in the Hero with the same 5 megapixel resolution with autofocus, LED flash and geo tagging. It also inherits the same SatNav functionality with A-GPS and Digital Compass.

Multimedia takes off from the same media playback support for the popular audio and video file formats, a stereo FM radio with RDS, speakerphone and stereo headphone listening from its 3.5mm headphone jack or via A2DP. The HTC Legend gets the same 512 MB ROM and an improved 384 MB RAM with practically unlimited phonebook entries and fields as well as the usual microSD memory expansion support for up to 16 GB.

I was hesitant on updating my HTC Legend to Android 2.2 as a result of the previous update several months ago. I had heard that Vodafone had faced a backlash to their update and had to make a U-turn regarding this. I therefore updated my HTC Legend after this, expecting everything to be as it should. Immediately I had loading issues every time I tried to get to the home screen. After having no luck online trying to find a solution, I played with ...

It is not that common for a phone manufacturer to have a special app store –though it certainly applies for those that own specific operating systems. This is the case with Apple’s iTunes for the iOS as well as the custom app stores for RIM’s BlackBerry OS and Palm’s WebOS. Even Samsung’s new Bada OS also has its own store. Unlike the above mentioned platforms, Windows Phone 7 is owned and made by Microsoft, not HTC. And while Microsoft is com...
