Why compare with us?

If you like to turn heads while talking to your wristwatch, then the LG GD910 is for you. Finally, the watchphone made famous by Dick Tracy in the cartoon series of the 60s becomes a reality. Never mind that it has a SIM free price of £500 when new.

At least the word watchphone finally gets to represent something real and palpable. So what does £500 get you? A lot. But it may require some getting used to as we now get a taste of how miserable the lives of super agents must be when using phones at this size.

Watchphone Features

Firstly, if one looks at it as a humongous chronometer wristwatch with a phone function, the £500 may seem cheap. But if you look at it as a mobile phone small enough to be tied around the wrist, it can be expensive. A closer look will reveal it’s a lot better than many mobile phones in the entry level category.

It’s a quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE on 2G which lets you wear this anywhere on the planet for international roaming capabilities on GSM. It’s also a 3G phone on a single band UMTS with HSDPA at 7.2 Mbps.

It gets preloaded with a browser that can take advantage of its high speeds but only if you don’t mind surfing on a 1.43” TFT display with QCIF resolution and 256k colors. It even sports a cutting edge capacitive touchscreen technology that allows you to control it with your fingers on a 1.43-inch screen. 7-year old kids with tiny fingers would love this gadget.

Imaging comes from a VGA camera which is its primary and secondary camera and can be its main reason for being. Onlookers gawking at you talking on your wristwatch with the person at the other end showing on the wristwatch face should be priceless, just make sure they don’t understand what you two are talking about.

It comes with Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP so you can listen to music in wireless stereo. Only problem is it has little onboard memory to carry a single MP3 file and no microSD slot to store whatever it is you want to listen to. So really, its A2DP is useful only using a wireless stereo headset to listen to the other party talk in stereo without bothering your seatmate.

The LG GD910 measures a compact (as it should) 49 x 39 s 13.8mm which is as thick as most touchscreens on the market and with a lightweight 84g, it is even heavier than some handsets on the market and is as heavy as the Sony Ericsson Jalou. It’s even heftier than many chronometers out there. So for £500, just think of it as a chronometer with phone function.
