Once in a while, a smartphone comes along that demolishes conventional thinking not so much with the way it works, but with even just one remarkable feature like providing a movie watching experience on the road that simply makes every other smartphone feel unwanted.
We’re talking about the new LG GW990 from South Korea’s second largest mobile phone innovator. It has the largest TFT resistive touchscreen in the market approaching many those of palm tablet at 4.8 inches with Wide-VGA resolution (480 x 1024).
There’s only a handful of smartphones offering 4-inch displays and above with flagships from Toshiba and Sony Ericsson to mention some. New Operating System
The new LG smartphone is the world’s first to use the MeeGo operating system. This is a fusion of two Linux-based platforms, the Moblin OS (Mobile Internet) from Intel optimized to work on the Intel Atom core architecture and the Maemo OS from Nokia. We would have thought Nokia would be the first to come out with a handset on this platform but LG seems to have taken the initiative though we can surely expect a future Nokia N97 to run on one.

Hardware Features at a Glance
It’s no surprise that the LG GW990 would run on an x86-based Moorestown CPU derivative in the Intel Atom Pineview processor considering the Moblin kernel in the MeeGo is optimized around this engine. A cursory look at its data sheet reveals that apart from its new platform, it comes with conventional hardware features that we’ve come to expect from upscale and flagship smartphones.
Thisis a quad band GSM with class 10 GPRS/EDGE on 2G and a 3G phone on the dual band UMT with 7.2 Mbps HDSPA and 2 Mbps HSUPA speeds for fast internet surfing and downloading. It has WiFi 802.11b/g for hotspot surfing and the usual Bluetooth and MicroUSB support for local data connectivity.
Its stunning 4.8-inch display comes with a gravity accelerometer for auto rotate viewing convenience while imaging gets a 5 megapixel snapper with autofocus, LED flash and geo tagging from its built-in GPS receiver with A-GPS support.
