One of the world’s smallest touchscreen smartphone comes from the world’s fifth leading mobile phone maker LG Electronics. This is the LG Mini GD880, so named to embody in words “requests from actual consumers who were unhappy with current full touchscreen phones that are too bulky, too clunky and too expensive,” declared by LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company CEO and President Dr. Skott Ann. For sure, there’s nothing mini about it as it is not a lite version of any current LG mobile phone.
Upscale Features
This LG Mini is an example of squeezing into a slim and compact monolithic body the features we’ve taken for granted in an upscale smartphone that often gets too big and unwieldy.
For starters, its 3.2 inch TFT LCD resistive touchscreen with a Wide VGA (480 x 854) resolution and 256 colors gets optimized on a petite body as it almost bleed to the edges with the least possible bezel framing.
There’s only enough space at the top to accommodate a secondary VGA camera for 3G video calls and a bottom space just to provide aesthetic balance. The result is a slim 102 x 47.2 x 10.6 mm body oozing with style on a minimalist design as well as substance underneath it all.
Substance starts with its dual band UMTS radio with HSDPA at 7.2 MBps and HSUPA at 2 MBps on the 3G network and a quad band GSM radio with GPRS/EDGE class 10 speeds on 2G. There’s WiFi 802.11b/g with DLNA for hotspot surfing and local high speed data transfers with Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and microUSB 2.0. There’s also SatNav functionality with a built-in GPS receiver with A-GPS.
It comes with a decent 330 MB of internal storage with up to 1000 phonebook entries and fields as well as a hot-swappable microSD for up to 32 GB.
It captures images with a 5-megapixel autofocus camera with face/smile detection, geo tagging, image stabilization and geo-tagging. There’s also video recording with VGA resolution at a frame rate of 15fps. Its 3.2-inch touchscreen comes with multitouch data input support, a gravity accelerometer for auto rotate viewing, an ambient light sensor for auto brightness and a scratch resistant glass covering. It has gesture control with pinch-zoom action when scanning images in its gallery section.
There’s the usual media playback support for all the popular audio and video file formats including DivX/Xvid video codecs, Dolby Mobile, stereo FM with RDS, a 3.5 mm headphone port and Bluetooth A2SP support for your mobile entertainment.
The LG Mini GD880 is a socially aware smartphone with social networking integration from the Social Network Connect for staying in touch with online friends, the Social Network Feed for automatic updates to Twitters and Facebook from the homescreen and the Social Address Book which is a phonebook subset containing your online friends.
