Nokia E5 deals on contract

Nokia E5 deals

After the successes of its E71/72 smartphones on the Blackberry full-QWERTY candybar form factor, world Symbian smartphone leader Nokia must be agonizing on how to update the line and still enjoy the same or better market following.

Easy. Don’t tinker with the looks, features and everything else that made them the successes they were, and then slap a lower sticker price. A wider market will be knocking on their doors in no time. But sadly, getting a lower price tag so close on their heels require some tinkering both in the looks and features departments.

That’s what they did to the Nokia E5. While carrying the E-series heritage of business smartphone upmanship, a lower price means going a few steps down the feature and looks ladder of the now legendary E72. And unlike Blackberry, you get a great set of body color choices. Apart from the usual black, you can have copper brown, sky blue, silver gray and chalk white.

Superb Features Nonetheless

The E5 still gets the same communications radio wonders of the E72. It’s a 3G phone on the tri band UMTS radio for markets on both sides of the Atlantic and a quad band GSM for seamless international roaming on 2G. Its data connectivity is just as superb with class 32 GPRS/EDGE speeds of up to 296 Kbps on 2G while getting 3G HSDPA at 10.2 Mbps and HSUA 2 Mbps for remarkably fast internet surfing and downloading.

You also get hotspot support for up to 54 Mbps for a no-wait surfing courtesy of its WiFi 802.11b/g with UPnP and DLNA support. Bluetooth 2.0 comes with A2DP and its microUSB 2.0 brings high speed local data transfer and syncing in the wireless and wired options, respectively. There’s also SatNav support using a built-in GPS receiver with A-GPS support and is preloaded with Ovi Maps.

Beneath its candybar Blackberry-ish body is the same ARM 11 processor clocked at 600 MHz running the same Symbian OS 9.3 with S60 3.2 UI the E72 has. Memory is likewise no different. You get 250 MB onboard storage expandable to 32 GB using its microSD support.

So what did Nokia tinker with on the E72? For starters, the E5 doesn’t have the 16 million colors on the E72 but you still get the same QVGA resolution on a slightly larger 2.4-inch TFT LCD display. There’s also no accelerometer that E72 has. There’s also no scroll bar and optical trackpad.

Next, its imaging doesn’t get autofocus, but it still delivers the same upscale 5 megapixel resolution on its fixed focus camera with LED flash and VGA recording at 15fps. Mobile entertainment looks deceptively the same. It gets the same stereo FM radio with RDS, speakerphones, a 3.5mm headphone jacks and A2DP profile support for wireless stereo listening.

But there’s a trifle difference in the audio and video format their media players support. Gone is the 3GP video and M4A support though a 3rd party downloadable player can do the job them if you want one.

Then it loses the digital compass and preloaded document reader as well as Flash Lite 3.0 support on the E72. What’s ironic is that despite its thicker profile, it get a less muscled li-ion battery rated at 1200 mAh powering up the handset for up to 8,5 hours of talk time on 2G and 38 hours on standby.
