On its Palm Pre Plus smartphone, the struggling American phone maker retains just about everything on the Palm Pre, updating its 8 GB internal memory to 16 GB but still no microSD slot support. But no matter, either 8 or 16 GB is enough for most people to survive a week in the desert listening to their MP3 files.

Then it brings the Palm Pre to full-fledge digicam status with a video recording Palm forgot to put in the earlier Pre. Capacitive touchscreen is the one defining technology that has catapulted the iPhone to where it is today. But not without multitouch. And that’s what Palm added to the capacitive touchscreen on the Pre - multitouch data input technology.

The Pre Plus is housed in the same 100.5 x 59.5 x 16.9mm body with identical vertical sliding full QWERTY dimensions when closed. But with all that feature updating, it is no wonder the Pre Plus inevitably gains some weight. But nothing to worry about. The Pre Plus is just 5g heavier than the 133g of the Palm Pre. It even runs a more updated Palm WebOS 1.3.5 platform on the same ARM Cortex A8 clocked at 600 MHz and aided by a PowerVR SGX graphics accelerator engine.

Feature Set

Apart from all the feature upgrades, the Palm Pre Plus shares just about everything else about its earlier Pre even the dimensions and body styling. This should extend the popularity of the Palm Pre line a bit longer. It still comes in the same black body though.

It’s the same quad band GSM (850/ 900/ 1800/ 1900) on 2G with class 10 GPRS/EDGE data speeds up to 236.8 Kbps. It’s also a 3G on the single band UMTS (2100) with dual band versions for AT&T. High speed data connectivity gets HSDPA only at 3.6 Mbps. There’s the same WiFi 802/11b/g for hotspot support as well as Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and microUSB 2.0 for wireless and wired data syncing, respectively. SatNav remains supported with its built-in GPS receiver with A-GPS. It gets the AT&T navigator apps for US versions.

The display is the same 3.1-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen with half-VGA resolution and 16 million colors. It has the same gravity accelerometer with UI auto rotate and now gets multitouch data input wonders as well. Its camera remains with the same 3.2 megapixel resolution, fixed focus, LED flash and now gets basic video recording.

There’s still no secondary video call camera. Multimedia still doesn’t get any FM radio and settles with the same media players for the popular audio and video formats out there. Its standard Li-Ion battery with 1150 mAh rating can only bring you up to 4 hours of talk time on 2G and 350 hours on standby. That’s an hour less than what the same battery yields in the less able Palm Pre predecessor.
