The first green mobile phone on the planet comes from the Korean mobile phone giant Samsung. But it’s really blue. It’s called the Samsung Blue Earth, first unveiled at this year’s Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, putting to the fore Samsung’s commitment to environment-friendly products found in its other consumer electronic line. Samsung Blue Earth deals on contract
Solar-powered consumer electronic products are nothing new and it’s actually surprising that the technology is not pervasively used in mobile gadgets like mobile phones that should be a natural to solar powering technology. For sure, there are already handsets harnessing solar energy to power it up, but not entirely, just an aid. The Samsung S7550 Blue Earth is one such device. It’s one of the emerging green or eco-friendly handsets that have joined the “save the earth” bandwagon.
Earth Friendly Besides
Samsung claims the handset has been designed with environment-friendly materials and manufacturing process right from the start. It uses recycled Post Consumer Materials like old water bottles and recycled paper pulp for its carton retail package as well a soya-based ink for printing.
The handset itself uses no harmful synthetic products in its body like Brominated flame retardants or PVC compounds. It is also 5-star certified by the EU for a power charger that consumes only 0.03 watts of electricity on standby.
The solar power gets up to 4 hours of talk time when exposed under the sun for 10-14 hours but it’s really meant to top-up the main traditional charging process. For sure, you won’t ever have to suffer low bat warnings during the day. It comes preloaded with the Eco Walk pedometer application and has an Eco mode switch from dimming display brightness and other features not used.

Its green features won’t sell the handset alright, but it won’t disappoint as an upscale 3G feature non-smartphone with HSDPA/HSUPA data connectivity on the dual band UMTS radio. It’s a quad band GMS/GPRS/EDGE on 2G. It also has WiFi 802/11n/g for hotspot surfing and the complement of Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and microUSB 2.0 for wireless and wired data transfers, respectively. It has SatNav functionality with a built-in GPS receiver with A-GPS support.
You get an excellent 3-inch Wide QVGA (240 x 400) capacitive touchscreen display with 16 million colors and a gravity accelerometer for auto rotate viewing convenience, turn to mute and smart unlock features. Imaging is average with an outdated 3.2 megapixel fixed focus shooter with face and smile detected as well as a mediocre QVGA recording at 15fps and a secondary video call camera at the front.

Internal memory on the Samsung S7550 Blue Earth gets 180 MB with a phonebook capacity for 2,000 contact entries with microSD expandability for up to 16 GB. Its standard li-ion battery rated at 1080 mAh gets aided with its solar powering cells at the back.
