Samsung E1107 Crest Solar deals on contract
Samsung covers the lower but wider end of the markets with affordable phones in the conventional candybar form factor. Many of them are stripped to the bare minimum which makes them pretty much useless outside of their reason – communicating by phone on the road.
One of them is the Samsung E1107 Crest Solar, also known in other markets as the Samsung Solar Guru. It’s a bare basic GSM handset and as you may have guessed from its name alone, this is a solar assisted handset that can deliver up to 2 hours of talk time on a 12-hour charge under the mid-day sun.
But don’t leave it that long inside the car in direct sunlight so as not to melt the body. More realistically, you get 1.3 hours of talk time and 20 minutes of standby time on a 10-minute solar charging so you won’t ever have to suffer low bat warnings in the middle of call during the day.
Basic handset Features
Measuring 105.2 x 44.2 x 16.4 mm and weighing a very pocketable 77g, the Crest Solar is a basic dual band GSM (900 / 1800) with class 10 GPRS data speeds for up to 48 Kbps. It doesn’t get EDGE, much less 3G or WiFi, nor is there any local data connectivity option like Bluetooth or microUSB.

It is obvious where the handset will appeal the most - a market that looks at the mobile phone as an indispensable but basic communications tool on the road and not one frill more.
You can still have a one or two-liner LED display on a basic handset you can find in museum-grade Motorola mobile phones of the early 90s. But for 21st century handsets, nothing could be more basic than a square CSTN display that measures 1.53 inches across with 128 x 128 resolution and 64k colors.
You can also forget about any imaging as people who would get this have no intentions of taking pictures from a mobile phone. And while there’s a monaural FM radio, there’s neither a 3.5mm audio jack nor even a USB port for listening, much less A2DP as it has no Bluetooth.
You can only listen from its speakerphone. Needless to say, you can forget about an MP3 player as well since it has neither a generous onboard memory nor a microSD card slot to store your MP3 files anyway. It only has enough onboard memory for up to 500 contacts in the phonebook. At least it can do polyphonic as well as MP3 ringtones.
It does get preloaded with a WAP 2.0 HTML browser you can use if you have a GPRS data plan to surf under the painful experience of GPRS speeds but you may need one to download MP3 ringtones.
Apart from its solar charging feature, it comes with a flashlight feature so you can use the handset when groping in theater darkness to find your way through. It also comes with the usual basic phone apps like a mobile tracker, organizer, T9 predictive text as well as SMS.
There’s no MMS since it has no multimedia facility anyway. Its standard Li-Ion batter rated at 800 mAh can get you up to 8 hours of talk time and 570 hours of standby time. SAR EU is 0.56 watts per kilo.
