In keeping with the look and feel of the Galaxy S, the Galaxy Mini is a fantastic alternative. More affordable than its high-end rivals, it doesn't compromise on 3G or Wi-Fi. In fact, there's little the Mini does compromise on.
You can easily check your email, chat online and receive notifications from social networking sites. Stream videos from the YouTube app, or simply enjoy the music player and FM radio. The Mini has the potential for 32GB of storage, so you can keep hundreds of videos, tunes and photos. Unfortunately, the 3.15MP camera isn't quite up to modern standards, but all in all, the Mini is a decent little device.
Due to the success of the Galaxy S since its release in the summer of 2010, Samsung has been keen to popularise on the brand name by expanding the series to include a whole host of new handsets. In January 2011 four new handsets were added to the line-up that offer a similar look and feel to the Galaxy S but at a much more affordable price. Out of the Galaxy Ace, Galaxy Fit and Galaxy Gio, the Galaxy Mini is perhaps the phone that is most in keeping with the look and feel of the original Galaxy S.
As it is more affordable than Samsung´s flagship you would expect them to have cut back on some features. For affordable phones it is usually Wi-Fi and 3G that are axed in an effort to reduce costs but it is satisfying to see them both present on the Galaxy Mini. This means that the Galaxy Mini is still an excellent choice for all sorts of online activities including checking your mail, chatting on instant messaging services like Google Talk, and also updating your social network status. The Galaxy Mini does come with integration for the likes of Facebook and Twitter making this an excellent choice of phone for anyone who is a regular user of these services.
The Galaxy Mini also comes with Adobe Flash support so it can easily stream video content from online, and a YouTube app is included with the standard installation. As the Galaxy Mini runs on Android 2.2 Froyo it comes with many other excellent Google features including Picasa integration and Google Maps.
Entertainment wise the Galaxy Mini is not going to let you down, it still comes with fantastic music and video playback on top of its web browsing abilities. There is also an FM radio with RDS included, and the 160MB of internal storage space can be expanded with 32GB microSD cards, with a 2GB card included with the phone.
The only real places the Galaxy Mini seems to have cut back is with the camera and the processor, which is a relatively sluggish 600MHz. the 3.15 megapixel camera may be OK for everyday use but don´t expect to be taking fantastic photos with it. It does come with QVGA video recording but the camera unfortunately does not come with any sort of flash for darkened environments.
The Galaxy Mini, Galaxy Ace, Galaxy Gio and Galaxy Fit all offer a refreshing and more affordable alternative to Samsung´s highly popular Galaxy range. The Galaxy Mini offers a lot for its price tag and is an excellent phone for messaging, web browsing and general entertainment.
