When it comes to smartphones, having a decent screen is more important than you might think. It’s all very well having a fabulous phone that has lots of features, but if you have a terrible screen that doesn’t show videos like you want to see them, well what’s the point?
The Samsung Galaxy W knows a good screen, with its 3.7inch WVGA screen showcasing an exciting 16 million colours to bring photos and videos to life.
The Galaxy W is one of the first new phones to make use of Samsung´s new naming convention for its Galaxy range of Android phones. The W falls somewhere in the middle of the higher end Galaxy S2 and the lower end Galaxy Y. It offers a great set of hardware features that are only a slight step down from the top of the range phones, and come in a much more affordable package.
The Galaxy W comes with a gorgeous 3.7 inch WVGA screen, employing 16 million colours, that is much more pocket friendly than the oversized display of the Galaxy S2. The phone is not quite as square as the latter device either, as it comes with a much more traditional curved design making it more aesthetically appealing in some people´s eyes and also more comfortable to hold.
Like most phones in the Samsung Galaxy range the Galaxy W comes running a combination of Android Gingerbread and TouchWiz. This offers one of the most visually appealing and easy to use Android experiences and comes complete with Android Market, excellent web browsing and a range of entertainment features. The interface is powered by a 1.4 GHz processor which, while not dual core like the S2, offers a fair amount of power for all software applications on offer. This is also combined with 512MB RAM to make this a pretty speedy and powerful Android smartphone.
3G and Wi-Fi are both on offer so that the Galaxy W is an excellent phone for making use of various online features. This includes general web browsing, social networking, instant messaging and email. Also included is streaming video entertainment with YouTube and the phone also includes Adobe Flash support. On top of this the Galaxy W supports RSS feeds.
The phone supports a wide range of music and video formats and supports 32GB microSD. An FM radio is also included so that you can listen to music via your favourite radio station as well. The Galaxy W also comes with a pretty decent 5 megapixel camera, which includes LED flash and 720p video recording as well as many options to play around with. The Galaxy W also has a front facing VGA camera.
In many respects the Galaxy W is a lot like the Samsung Galaxy R, in that it is a slightly scaled down version of the Galaxy S2 in terms of hardware. However, while the Galaxy R was physically quite similar to the S2 the Galaxy W employs a distinct form factor. The Galaxy W offers a great set of features and an excellent smartphone experience that is friendlier to your wallet than the top of the range Galaxy devices. A good compromise between price and features.
