Samsung Pixon M8800 deals on contract
Angling to kick Sony Ericsson’s camera phones to dust, Korea’s leading mobile phone maker Samsung has its Pixon line that must be causing sleepless nights for the Japanese phone maker whose Cybershot handsets have started to look boring by comparison, at least those that feature 8 megapixel resolution cameras and below.
The Samsung Pixon M8800 combines touchscreen wizardry with its own glorious 8 megapixel camera in the hope that it gets to be the definitive standard in it class. But is it?
Standout Features
Starting with its superb 8-megapixel imaging prowess, the Pixon M8800 features autofocus, LED flash, face/smile/blink detection, wide dynamic range and image stabilization that have become pretty standards on decent point-ad-shoot digicams out there.
It also allows you to geo-tag your images taken from it with its GPS receiver. There’s no high definition video recording but it still hit the above average mark with its Wide VGA video recording at 30fps. It even has a secondary camera in its front to support video calls on 3G.

All your exquisite images and video gets displayed on its 3.2-inch TFT LCD resistive touchscreen display with Wide-QVGA resolution and 256k colors which gets the benefit of a gravity accelerometer for auto rate portrait or landscape viewing convenience according to handset tilt. This may come as an inconvenience to users but its stylus comes as a dongles as the body has no compartment for it.
Multimedia doesn’t get overlooked as CPU-intensive video processing benefits from its Qualcomm MSM6281 processor clocked at 500 MHz and running a proprietary Samsung OS with the now familiar TouchWiz 2.0 UI.
You get entertained on the road with its stereo FM radio with RDS and the usual media playback support for video content in the DivX/XviD, H.263/H.264, WMV and MP4 formats and music content in the MP3, eAAC+, WMA and AMR file formats. The listening experience gets enhanced with its SRS (Surround Sound System) virtual multi-channel sound as well the DNSe (Dynamic Natural Sound engine) stereo widening option.
Its video can be output to a large display using its TV-out facility. There’s no 3.5mm headphone jack but you can go wireless with its A2DP support on with Bluetooth stereo earphones.

The Pixon M8800 is a quad band GMS with class GPRS/EDGE on 2G and is also a 3G phone in the single band UMTS with HSDPA at 7.2 Mbps for a no-wait internet surfing experience. There’s no WiFi support but you get Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP and microUSB 2.0 for wireless and wired data transfers, respectively. There’ SatNav support with it integrated GPS receiver but n voice-guided navigation.
Its elegantly styled monolithic profile measures 107.9 x 54.6 x 13.8 mm making it one of the slimmest touchscreens in the market and one of the lightest at 121g.
Phone memory is a decent 200 MB with microSD expandability for up to 16 GB. Its Li-Ion 1,000 mAh battery gets a rather minimal 3.6 hours of talk time of 2G and 290 hours in standby. SAR EU is rated at 0.3 watts per kilo.
