Also known as the Samsung Player Ultra and minus the Tocco designation, the Samsung S8300 Tocco Ultra Edition is a high end 3G smartphone on a slider touchscreen form factor. Its stylishly slim body measures 110 x 51.5 x 12.7 mm and weighs a very pocketable 105g to make it one of the lightest slider touchscreens in the market.
It comes in three colors of platinum red, platinum blue and gold. Beneath its simple elegance lies a powerful 500 MHz Qualcomm MSM6281 processor running a proprietary OS with the now familiar TouchWiz 2.0 UI.
Imaging and Multimedia Features
The S8300 Tocco Ultra Edition comes with a brilliant 2.8-inch AMOLED display that uses capacitive touchscreen technology. It features Wide VGA resolution and 16 million colors and comes with two sensors – a gravity accelerometer for auto rotate portrait or landscape viewing depending on handset orientation and a proximity sensor for automatically disabling its highly responsive touchscreen sensitivity when held against the face or ear in a call.
It is also covered with a scratch-resistant surface.
Its imaging prowess has few peers with its spectacular 8-mgapixel autofocus camera with LED Flash, face/smile detection, wide dynamic range and geo tagging from its integrated GPS receiver.
Another stand-out feature is its high definition video recording with D1 (720 x 480) resolution as well as VGA resolution both at 30fps. You also get D1 time lapse and QVGA slow motion video recording. There’s also a front-facing secondary camera for 3g video calls.
Mobile entertainment starts with stereo FM radio with RDS and FM broadcast recording. Then there are the usual media players that can decode audio files in the MP3, AAC and WMA format and video files in the MP4, H.263/ H.264 and WMV9 formats, including DivX and XviD codecs in the AVI container file.
You get a speakerphone but no 3.5mm headphone jack but you can go wireless with its A2DP profile for stereo Bluetooth earphones or use the earphones supplied using the proprietary USB connection.
High End Features
The S8300 is a 3G phone on the dual band UMTS with HSDPA data connectivity speeds at 7.2 Mbps and a quad band GMS with Class 12 GPRS.EDGE radio on 2G. There’s no WiFi but you get local data connectivity option via Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and microUSB 2.0 for wireless and wired data synchronization and transfers, respectively. SatNav functionality is served by its integrated GPS receiver with A-GPS support.
The Tocco Ultra Edition comes preloaded with a document viewer from the common MS Office and PDF files as well the HTML browser and Email client support. You get a decent 80 MB onboard memory with up to 2,000 phonebook contact entries. A microSD memory expansion slot gets you to up to 16 GB. With an 830 mAh Li-Ion battery that’s fully charged, your talk times can go up to a modest 4 hours and standby times of up to 350 hours. SAR EU gets 0.55 watts per kilo.
