Want a sophisticated touchscreen phone without the exorbitant price tag? The Samsung Tocco Icon is the sequel to the ever-popular Tocco Lite, one of the first affordable touch-screens to arrive on market.

The Icon kicks things up a notch, with great messaging facilities including support for Gmail, AIM and Yahoo Messenger. It’s also one of the few phones to support Facebook chat. Wi-Fi, a camera and music player round off the aptly-named Icon’s useful features.

The Tocco Icon is the sequel to the highly popular Tocco Lite that, along with the LG Cookie, pioneered the affordable touchscreen market. The Tocco Icon is an excellent handset for people interested in purchasing a touchscreen phone but either unwilling to pay the high price of high end devices or just unsure about whether the touch phenomenon is really for them.

The Tocco Icon is not just more affordable but also more comfortably sized than the latest touchscreen phones, which often push beyond 4 inches in screen size. While these larger screens may be more desirable for viewing videos or playing games they make the handsets less portable and less appropriate for general phone usage.

The Tocco Icon is a great messaging phone with SMS, MMS and email clients such as Gmail fully supported. The Tocco Icon also comes with great instant messaging support for AIM and Yahoo messenger, and is also one of the few phones to come with support for Facebook chat. Social networks such as Facebook and Twitter are fully supported by the Tocco Icon making it a superb phone for frequenters of these popular online services.

Although the Tocco Icon does come with good support for social networks and instant messaging, it is slightly let down in this department by a lack of 3G. Internet connection is instead supplied via Wi-Fi or, if you really wish, GPRS and EDGE. Bluetooth is also supported, with A2DP for wireless headphones, although some people may consider the lack of 3G to be the Tocco Icon´s main drawback.

The Tocco Icon also fares well in the entertainment department, with good support for music and video and an FM radio being present. You can have up to 32GB of storage space with microSD cards and also make use of many fun games. The 1.3 megapixel camera on the Tocco Lite is also perhaps a bit of a letdown in this day and age, but is still perfectly suited for everyday use.
