Looking set to match the popularity of its predecessor, the Samsung Tocco Lite 2 is a sleek phone that benefits from a decent spec and a low price tag.
Though the Tocco Lite 2 runs on Samsung’s own operating system and doesn’t have access to the Android Market, this phone is a great all-rounder. If you’re looking for a good-looking handset that excels in the basic, this might be the phone for you.
Samsung’s announcement of the Tocco Lite 2 was no doubt the result of the original Tocco Lite’s incredible success. Packaging great features into an attractive budget handset is always going to go down well, and the Tocco Lite 2 won’t disappoint users looking for that sort of phone. Though it lacks the apps and connectivity that come with most smartphones, this handset offers a lot of bang for not a lot of buck.
The Samsung Tocco Lite 2 follows on in the stylish footsteps of the original Tocco Lite as a streamlined, attractive handset that’s lightweight at just 95g. For such a budget handset, Samsung have done a good job of making it feel sturdy, and it doesn’t suffer from the flimsiness that cheapens a lot of phones. The handset features a 3-inch TFT screen, which is big enough to show images and icons clearly.
The Samsung Tocco Lite 2 has a raft of features - though none of them will blow you away, it must be said. The screen’s 240x320 pixel ratio is a little on the low side, and the phone’s 3.2MP fixed-focus camera won’t wow any photographers, but it offers sharp images for the price – if you’re looking for better snaps, you’ll probably have to loosen the purse strings a little more. The 20MB of internal memory isn’t much, but it’s upgradable to 16GB, which should be more than enough – this’ll store more images, songs and short videos than most people will ever have use for.
This isn’t a powerful handset: the Tocco Lite 2 is for users with humble needs, and this is reflected in the phone’s modest spec. The phone’s CPU is ample enough to keep menus and applications buzzing along smoothly, and the phone’s battery packs in 1,000mAH, which is little in comparison to most modern smartphone batteries, but serves the purposes of the Tocco Lite 2 very well.
When it comes to ease of navigation, Samsung come second only to Nokia, and the Tocco Lite 2 is testament to this. The phone also features integrated Facebook, Twitter and MSN access, making it easier than ever to stay in the loop. Unfortunately, the Tocco Lite 2 still doesn’t have 3G, which does make social networking and web browsing that little bit less convenient, but Bluetooth and Wi-Fi will be plenty for most light to moderate web users.
Times have changed since the Tocco Lite was released, and the Tocco Lite 2’s main competitors are the swathes of budget smartphones available at the moment. The Tocco Lite 2 is a true beginner phone, stripped of everything fancy. If you suspect you might miss the Android Market’s wealth of apps, the Tocco Lite 2 probably isn’t for you. At the lower end of the smartphone spectrum, both the Samsung Galaxy Y and the LG Optimus Chat offer all the functionality of a smartphone for less than £100. Of course, if you’re not bothered about apps and the rest of it, you probably won’t go too far wrong with the Tocco Lite 2.
