Unlike the original Wave, which was the first smartphone to come with a Super AMOLED screen and Hummingbird processor, the Samsung Wave 3 doesn’t come with any ‘firsts’.
But, why would you need to reinvent such a seriously good smartphone anyway? Instead the Wave 3 comes with the newest Bada 2.0 OS and an upgraded 1.4GHz processor as well as a 4inch Super AMOLED touchscreen. Not too bad when you consider this smartphone’s mid-range price.
The Wave 3 is a phone that competes against Samsung´s highly popular Galaxy S2, but runs on its own Bada operating system instead of Android. As this still uses the TouchWiz interface it has the same look and feel as Samsung´s Galaxy line of phones and also packs in the same high performance. The phone is provided with various homescreens which can be swiped through with a finger, and can be populated with icons and widgets.
The Wave 3 features a gorgeous 4 inch WVGA Super AMOLED screen, much in the same vein as the display found on the original Galaxy S. This is coated with Gorilla Glass and comes with multitouch support as well as supporting handwriting recognition. The interface is powered by a 1.5GHz processor which provides the Wave with plenty of power and speed.
Connectivity wise the Wave 3 includes support for 3G and Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi comes with Wi-Fi Direct and the phone can also be used as a wireless hotspot. Because of all of this the Wave 3 comes with some excellent online features to make use of. General web browsing is a joy thanks to the quick connection speeds and the large clear screen in use.
The Wave 3 also comes with excellent social networking support for the likes of Facebook and Twitter, and comes with email support and Samsung ChatON instant messaging. ChatON is Samsung´s answer to BlackBerry Messenger and Apple´s new iMessage although it can be used on a variety of different platforms. ChatON is not just a text based messaging service as it allows you to share videos, images and hand written notes with other users. Its cross platform status should give it an upper hand over BlackBerry and Apple´s alternatives. The Wave also includes threaded SMS and an great email support.
The Wave 3 comes with a great 5 megapixel camera with an LED flash and various features including blink detection, touch focus and 720p video recording. There is also a video light for recording videos in the dark and a VGA front facing camera that you can use for video calling and mirror apps.
In terms of entertainment the Wave 3 comes with excellent music and video playback and decent media players to enjoy a good range of personal media. The phone has 3GB internal storage which is good for a fair amount of music and some videos although this can be topped up with 32GB microSD cards. Other entertainment options include YouTube, an FM radio and the option to stream video content to a larger screen with a TV-out port.
The Wave 3 sits at the top of the Wave series, with cheaper Wave phones being available in the form of the Wave M and Wave Y. It offers a comparable user experience to some of the best Samsung Galaxy phones as the Bada operating system is fairly similar in design to Android and still makes use of Samsung´s TouchWiz interface. A decent camera is present, as well as excellent entertainment and web based features to play around with.
