Preview Summary:Samsung Wave M 2

The Samsung Wave M is a bit of a chunky phone, albeit one that’s surprisingly lightweight. The handset comes with a plastic finish that might put some buyers off.

A reasonable 3.65inch LCD screen is a nice touch, but with a poor 320x480 display you’ll find that viewing websites is harder than you would like. The Wave M does come with a nice 5MP camera though, so it’s not all bad.

The Wave M is the midrange counterpart of Samsung´s Bada running Wave smartphones. It is one of the first Wave phones to make use of Samsung´s new naming convention (with M standing for midrange). The Wave M provides a good set of messaging and entertainment features and is ideal for all forms of web browsing thanks to its 3G and Wi-Fi support.

Bada is Samsung´s proprietary operating system which is combined on the Wave M with the TouchWiz interface. On the surface it offers a very similar experience to the Galaxy range of phones, with apps and widgets available and scrollable homepages. The Wave M comes with a 3.7 inch screen that is spacious enough to provide an enjoyable experience for things like web browsing.

This is supported by the 3G and Wi-Fi options available, with Wi-Fi Direct and the ability to use the phone as a wireless hotspot. Threaded SMS is included on the Bada OS, as well as excellent email and instant messaging options including Samsung´s new ChatON service. ChatON is set to compete against BlackBerry Messenger and Apple´s iMessage and has the added advantage of being cross platform (BBM can only be used on BlackBerry phones and iMessage is only available for iPhone).

The Wave M has a 5 megapixel camera that includes an LED flash and features such as smile detection. It also includes HVGA video recording and a VGA camera is on offer on the front of the phone for features such as video calling. Photos can also be uploaded to share online.

The Bada OS comes with Samsung Apps where you can download many apps to customise and extend the use of the Wave as well as download games to play with on the phone. Also included with TouchWiz is the Social Hub, which can pool all of your social networks and messaging services into one easy to manage interface.

Entertainment is covered quite well on the Wave M as the music and video players come with a good amount of support for the most popular formats. An FM radio is also included with the phone so that you can listen to the latest hits before they are released. A 3.5mm headphone socket is included with DNSe (Digital Natural Sound Engine). For entertainment files the Wave M includes 150MB of storage space which might get full pretty quickly, but the phone can also support 32GB microSD cards.

The Wave M offers a great touchscreen experience with plenty of entertainment value. A good camera is included, as well as apps and games to enjoy from Samsung Apps. The TouchWiz interface offers a similar experience to similar Android Galaxy phones and the Wave M has a good range of messaging options including social networking support and Samsung´s new ChatON instant messaging client. The Wave M falls in between the high end Wave 3 and the more affordable Wave Y.
