Samsung’s multi-OS product strategy rolls out another Windows Mobile smartphone in the Samsung i900 Omnia – a flagship phone anyway you look at it, and priced accordingly for the high end markets.

Designed only in black and measuring 112 x 56.9 x 12.5 mm and weighting a very pocket-friendly 122g to make it one of the lightest full-featured smartphone in the market. It justifies its omnipotent Omnia name with all the nifty upscale features we’ve come to expect from phones in this class.

High End Features

For starters, it runs the Windows Mobile 6.5 OS (upgradable from the 6.1 version that comes with it when new) with the TouchWiz UI powered by a Marvell PXA312 CPU clocked at 624 MHz. It gets preloaded with Pocket Office and a PDF viewer, a WAP 2.0 HTML browser with support for RSS feeds, IM and push email client apps.

Imaging gets a 5 megapixel autofocus shooter with LED flash, face and smile detection, wide dynamic range, image stabilization and geo tagging from its integrated GPS receiver. It supports video recording and has a secondary video call camera on its face.

Getting entertained down the road starts with its stereo FM radio with RDS. Then comes a complement of media players that support audio content in the MP3, AAC/AAC+, WMA, OGG and AMR file formats as well as video content in the DivX, XviD, WMV and MP4 formats.

It has a speakerphone and TV-out so you can use an external monitor or TV to view your images and videos on the handset. But it doesn’t have the industry standard 3.5mm audio out which leaves you to using its proprietary earphones via USB port or go wireless with its A2DP support for Bluetooth stereo earphones.

The images and videos taken from the Omnia gets justice with its brilliant display that features a 3.2-inch TFT LCD resistive touchscreen with wide-WVGA resolution and 64k colors limited by its OS.

It further benefits from a gravity accelerometer sensor for auto rotate portrait or landscape viewing orientation. There’s handwriting recognition and an optical trackpad below the display.

The Omnia is your basic 3G phone on the single band UMTS (2100) and a quad band GSM (800 /900 / 1800 / 1900) for your international roaming on the 2G/GSM networks. Data connectivity gets a 7.2 Mbps HSDPA on 3G and class 12 GPRS/EDGE on 2G.

There’s WiFi 8.2.11b/g for hotspot surfing as well as Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP and microUSB 2.0 for local high speeds data connectivity. You also get SatNav with its onboard GPS receiver with A-GPS support for downloading Satellite data over the networks and WiFi.

Onboard memory comes in either 8GB or 16GB models enjoying microSD expandability for up to 16GB. It has 128 MB of RAM and 256 MB ROM for its OS and system files as well as a phonebook capacity with nearly unlimited entries and fields. There’s a 1440 mAh Li-Ion battery that only yields 5.9 hours of talk time on 2G and 500 ours in standby. SAR EU is 0.67 watts per kilogram.
